Planet of the Apes Necklace

Burnished and rhodium plated silver

We were fascinated by the scenographic power of the “village” designed for the film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), the eighth film in the series, based on the novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle (1963).

The village/necklace seems to draw inspiration from Villanovan prehistoric stilt dwellings, as well as Amazonian examples and some Native American pueblos.

I also distinguish Metropolis by Fritz Lang in the background, and the metaphor of an articulated and complex human housing system, full of sculptural and perspective influences. The monkeys, crafted in different and dynamic poses, help to make the whole necklace inhabited and joyful.
